Web2Reader — Privacy Policy

Web2Reader is a service that converts web articles into EPUB files and delivers them to your Kindle. It includes a Chrome extension (Web2Kindle), a newsletter forwarding address, and an online dashboard. This policy explains what data we collect, how it is used, and what we do not do.

By using Web2Reader (the extension, the newsletter service, or the website), you agree to the practices described in this policy.

How the service works

Web2Reader turns an article into an EPUB. When you use the extension to convert an article, or forward a newsletter to your personal address, the article content is sent to our servers at web2reader.com, where it is converted into an EPUB and emailed to your Kindle address.

Data stored on your device

The extension stores the following data locally in your browser's storage:

• Device ID — an anonymous, automatically generated identifier used for rate limiting and usage tracking.
• Kindle email address — the address your EPUBs are sent to.
• License key — your Web2Reader Pro license key, if purchased.
• API key — an optional key that links the extension to your web2reader.com account and dashboard.
• Conversion history and preferences — recent article titles and URLs, plus settings such as whether to include images or links.

Data sent to our servers

When you convert an article, the following is sent to web2reader.com so we can generate and deliver your EPUB:

• Article content — the article's title, body text, and images, along with metadata such as author, source site, publication date, and URL.
• Your Kindle email address — used to deliver the EPUB.
• An authentication identifier — your device ID, API key, or Pro license key, depending on how you access the service.

Optional AI summaries (TLDR)

If you use the optional TLDR summary feature, the article text is sent to web2reader.com and forwarded to Google's Gemini API, a third-party AI service, to generate a summary. This only happens when you explicitly request a summary.

Server-side storage and retention

We do store limited metadata to operate the service, enforce rate limits, and show you your usage history:

• Article title and source URL — so you can identify conversions in your history.
• Authentication identifier — your device ID, API key, or Pro license key, to associate conversions with your usage.
• Timestamps and status — when a conversion happened and whether it was a preview or a delivery, used for daily rate limits (50 sends and 50 previews per day for free users) and to track service usage.

For accounts linked to the web2reader.com dashboard via an API key, we store account details, usage history, and send records in our database so you can view them from your dashboard.

Third-party services

• Resend — we use Resend to deliver the EPUB email to your Kindle address. Resend receives your Kindle email address and the EPUB file.
• Google Gemini — the optional TLDR feature sends article text to Google's Gemini API for summarization.
• Original article and image servers — to build the EPUB, we fetch the article's page and embedded images from their original publishers. This is the core function of the service.

What we do not do

• We do not sell your data.
• We do not use your data for advertising or share it with third parties for marketing.
• We do not read your browsing history beyond the specific articles you choose to convert.
• We do not inject content scripts into web pages automatically.
• We do not store the body content of the articles you convert.

Permissions

The Web2Kindle Chrome extension requests the following permissions:

• activeTab — reads the current tab's content only when you open the extension.
• contextMenus — adds right-click menu items for quick access.
• notifications — shows you progress and completion notifications.
• scripting — reads page content as a fallback when a direct fetch fails.
• storage — stores your settings and history locally.
• <all_urls> — allows fetching article content and images from the websites you choose to convert.

Changes to this policy

If this privacy policy is updated, the revised version will be posted at this URL with an updated date.
